Feather light, swirling and floating in a bed of sound, melodies tinged with a bit of be-bop, a dash of soul, and a touch of r n’ b, nearly provocative in their free and easy dance with the originals – and yet, always remaining true to the innate soul of the piece. Whether it’s the Isley Brothers’ classic, Harvest for the World’ – taken apart and cooly put back together by the time it hits its most recognizable refrain – or even the Gamble-Huff-Song ‘Drowning in the Sea of Love’, gingerly africanized, or how about Marvin Gaye’s famous ‘What’s Goin On’, here, quietly dramatized. Even Michael Sembello’s hit from FLASHDANCE, ‘Maniac’ is taken on a fresh departure, namely into the world of jazz. – Whatever the singer, songwriter and guitarist does with his favourite songs on his current solo album ONE PURE SOUL; it’s simply fantastic.
